🏖️ Shore 🏖️ Surfing 🏖️ Beach ⛰️ Hill 🏖️ Ocean ️🏜️ DunePeniche is a fantastic city, full of a thousand and one things to see and do.
When you arrive by road, you can see that you are on an almost island, a peninsula, where Cape Carvoeiro is located. In the Middle Ages, this place was an island: a tombolo was gradually formed between the island and the continent. The first thing that strikes you, when you arrive in this small city of 15000 inhabitants, is the clarity. The sunlight, not blocked by high buildings, is reflected on colored or white walls, illuminating the whole city.
The ocean is everywhere here, and the relationship with the sea is fundamental: you are here in one of the very first fishing ports in Portugal. It is not uncommon to see small ports with pleasure boats, which allow the inhabitants of Peniche to go fishing, for pleasure or professionally. The French painter Maurice Boitel was not mistaken when he chose to paint the windmills present on Peniche: the landscapes are inspiring for any artist. Peniche, city of sports, beaches and nature lovers, is also a city full of history: the Fortress of Peniche, built in the 15th century, was used as a prison during the dictatorship of Salazar. This fortress guards the Port of Peniche, from where one embarks to go to the archipelago of Berlengas. It is also the most western port of continental Europe.
